What is an ISVA?

ISVA is short for Independent Sexual Violence Adviser. ISVA’s are specially trained advocates, or advisers with knowledge and experience of the criminal justice process. Our ISVA’s offer information, advice and support to help you in making the decision of whether you report your experiences of sexual violence to the police. She can talk through with you what will happen if you make a report to the police.

You do not have to report what happened to you. This is your choice and your ISVA will never try to persuade you either way. She will support you in whatever you decide is best for you.

If you do decide to report your ISVA will help you to do this and will support you through the process. Your ISVA can:

• Contact the police and Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) on your behalf and liaise with them to ensure your choices are heard
• Accompany you to appointments with the police, CPS and at court
• Keep you informed of what is happening with your case
• Talk you through what to expect at each stage of the process
• Advocate and speak on your behalf with other agencies
